Share
If you’ve ever seen a carpet of color spilling over rocks or crawling through a garden like a fairytale garden—that’s probably Creeping Phlox. And if you’ve tried to grow it and ended up with more “meh” than magic, you’re not alone. So many gardeners struggle with this gorgeous groundcover. But guess what? Leonie’s got the secret sauce!
Out back, her crawling hedge of Creeping Phlox turns heads every spring. It flows over the rock garden like a living rainbow—and we hear about it from customers all the time. Want to know how she does it? Keep reading!
Leonie’s No-Fail Tips for Creeping Phlox
Start with the Right Spot
Creeping Phlox loves the sun. Like, full-on sunbathing, no-shade kind of love. Make sure your spot gets at least 6 hours of sunshine a day.
Soil Matters
Well-drained soil is a must. Leonie recommends a 50/50 planting medium of compost and sand. Leonie also swears by a quick soil test before planting—"Treat your plants like they’re guests - you want them to feel at home!”
Don’t Crowd Them
Give your phlox plants room to spread! Space them about 12–18 inches apart. They’ll fill in faster than you think.
Water Wisely
Water when the top inch of soil is dry, especially the first season. But don’t overdo it—soggy roots are a surefire way to ruin the plants, and one of the most common ways gardeners lose their plants to begin with.
Trim After Blooming
Give your phlox a light haircut after flowering. It keeps them tidy and encourages even more blooms next time.
