The fruit is hop-like and attracts wildlife, and it serves as a host to many butterflies in their larval stage such as the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. This long-lived small tree grows slowly and is does well in a range of soil types, tolerating both wet and dry conditions as well as some urban pollution.
